I am a sucker for classic punk. I grew up listening to the stuff. I also love classic Oi!, and The Kings Kids do a great job of mixing the two. They have a great raw punk feel that is true to their roots. The band lists influences such as Rancid, The Clash, The Swingin’ Utters, and the Ramones, and you can feel all of those bands in The Kings Kids sound. Q: Tell us about how The Kids Kings formed, when did the band start playing together?
A: The Kings Kids started with an idea Jason (the singer) had after a Spirit West Coast show and realized the lack of Christian punk bands!
Q: You guys have an awesome street punk/Oi! type sound like the old school punk stuff, what bands have influenced The Kings Kids?
A: Well I didn’t grow up listening to Christian music, my influences were Rancid, The Swingin’ Utters, The Clash, The Street Dogs, David Bowie, One Man Army, and Johnny Cash.
Q: What does everyone in the band do when they are not playing?
A: Jason, our singer owns and runs his own graphic design company, Lupe, our bass player works at a cold storage, and I (Josh) work on classic cars and skateboard.
Q: The Kings Kids is a Christian punk band, what is the significance of the name The Kings Kids?
A: When Jason first came to know the Lord his friend Ken would always tell him “no matter what happens you’ll always be one of the kings kids” so it just seemed right haha.
Q: What is the purpose of The Kings Kids?
A: The purpose of The Kings Kids from day one was to spread the love of Jesus Christ to whomever cares to listen. Our music is a ministry and we hope will touch peoples lives.
Q: Where in the bible does the band draw it’s influence, are their certain books or verses in the bible that the band is into?
A: Any verse that talks about hope, faith, redemption, and love really. One song is actually all of Psalms 112.
Q: Anyone in the punk scene ever give the band a hard time about having a Christian message?
A: There’s been some people who leave during the set and sometimes people get turned off, but we are not to concerned about that. Hopefully later they will hear our music again and feel different.
Q: Tighty whiteys or boxers?
A: Well I cant speak on that one for the rest of the band, but I wear boxers! I think Lupe like the tighty whitesy! haha
Q: Do church going “Christians” ever look at the band and listen to the music and say “no way they are Christian, that music is awful?” What do you say to those people?
A: Haha I haven’t heard that from anybody, but when I tell some people we are a Christian “punk” band they freak out! And it’s like, hey this is what we know how to play and it’s to glorify God so deal with it haha!
Q: Tell us about your album “Urgency” where can we pick up the album, what tracks are the band most proud of?
A: The album “Urgency” is our first LP and it’s about the urgent need for people to hear about the love of the Lord in our world today! You can buy our album on Interpunk.com ,itunes, Amazon, and Napster, and at The Light record shop.
Q: What bands or music are the member of The Kings Kids listening to? Any bands we should keep an eye on (besides you guys of course)?
A: I personally listen to SLEEPING GIANT! They are a great band!!
Q: What are the plans for the band?
A: Right now we are in the studio doing some finishing touches on our second LP! It’s super exciting!
Q: Will The Kings Kids be touring soon? What shows do you have coming up?
A: We just got done doing a little DIY tour for 2 weeks. We went to LA, Mexicali, Riverside, Anaheim, Santa Cruz. It was great, we made a lot of friends and got our music in a lot of people’s hands.
Q: What bands have The Kings Kids played with? What bands do The Kings Kids want to play with?
A: We have played with Total Chaos, Guttermouth, La Plebe, Destroy The Vile, Secret Sect ,The Hoax, and we would love to be able to play with The Deal and Sleeping Giant, The Hanover Saints(rip), The Rekoning, and Flatfoot 56!
Q: If you could give the punk scene a message, what would it be?
A: I would tell them you can be a punk rocker and be a Christian too, we are not all in suits and ties and we care about you and are in no way better then you!… Fight The NEW WORLD ORDER!!
